James Turrell's Ganzfeld Apani (2011) to be Featured in New Trails Pavilion at Powder Mountain's Ski Resort Courtesy of Powder Mountain.
Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings, after purchasing Utah’s Powder Mountain ski resort in 2023, quickly transformed it into a private members club, limiting access to 2,000 acres of the mountain to nearby homeowners who pay an annual fee between $30,000 and $100,000. Despite inheriting $100 million in debt with the purchase, Hastings has taken steps to make the resort more inclusive. In a bid to engage the broader community, he announced plans to develop a public art park on the mountain, featuring large-scale sculptures and land artworks by renowned artists such as James Turrell, Nancy Holt, Jenny Holzer, and Paul McCarthy. The park is scheduled to open in 2026.
Hastings envisions Powder Mountain as a multi-season destination where recreation, art, and community intersect. The integration of art into the mountain is a reflection of this vision, as expressed in a recent statement. The art park’s initial plan was conceived by Matthew Thompson, the director of Powder Mountain’s new arts program, alongside Alex Zhang, the company’s chief creative officer, and independent curator Diana Nawi. Utah native Paul McCarthy, one of the featured artists, expressed his excitement about contributing to the project, highlighting the profound influence of Utah’s landscape on his work. Other artists like Arthur Jafa, EJ Hill, and Raven Halfmoon have also been commissioned, with more names to be announced soon.
